GEORGIA COMMUNITY SCHOOLYARDS

COMMUNITY SCHOOLYARD AT STONEWALL TELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Help design a new outdoor space for the Stonewall Tell community
WHAT IS THE GEORGIA COMMUNITY SCHOOLYARDS PROJECT?
Inviting Community Members to Share Outdoor School Spaces
All Georgians deserve to have a great public park in their neighborhood. In pursuit of that goal, Fulton County Schools, Trust for Public Land, and Park Pride are working together on a project to improve schoolyards and open them up as neighborhood green space. The public can use this space during daylight hours when schools are closed — including on weekends and during the summer.
During the 2022-2023 school year, STES students will design their schoolyard, and community members can weigh in as well. The new schoolyard will be built in summer 2023 and officially opened in fall 2023.
HOW IT WORKS

STUDYING THE SITE
Principal Porter directs our team to a part of campus that can be opened to the public. We study shade, slope, stormwater, and existing utilities to prepare for the design process.
PARTICIPATORY DESIGN
Using design activities and surveys, our team gets STES students and neighbors involved. Kids share their desires for the schoolyard, practice STEAM skills, and draw up their own designs for the site. We incorporate student and community contributions into the final plan.
CONSTRUCTION
The final plan gets approval from school administrators and school district leaders, then goes into documentation and permitting. Once it's approved, we build the new community schoolyard and invite everyone to a ribbon cutting!
