Help design a new shared space for the park and school

COMMUNITY SCHOOLYARD at BISCAYNE BEACH ELEMENTARY

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY SCHOOLYARD?

Inviting Community Members to Share Outdoor School Spaces

Miami Beach students deserve great outdoor spaces for learning and playing, and all Miami Beach residents deserve great public parks. In pursuit of these goals, City of Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), and Trust for Public Land (TPL) are working together to design and build improvements to the outdoor area around Biscayne Beach Elementary. The project will improve public space that can serve school uses during school hours, and that can act as neighborhood green space when school is closed.

During the 2024-2025 school year, students will design the schoolyard with input from community members. Project partners will work to raise funds for construction once the design is complete.

STUDYING THE SITE

Working with Biscayne Beach Elementary students, Trust for Public Land studies shade, slope, stormwater, and existing utilities on the community schoolyard site to prepare for the design process.

PARTICIPATORY DESIGN

Using classroom activities, surveys, and design workshops, students shape the schoolyard design. Kids share their desires for the schoolyard, practice math and art skills, and draw up their own proposed designs for the site. Trust for Public Land incorporates their contributions into the final schoolyard plan.

CONSTRUCTION

Fundraising for and building the final design can be a lengthy process! City of Miami Beach will work closely with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and other project partners to bring the students' and community's vision to life. The construction process can be scheduled so it won't conflict with the school year.
