COMMUNITY SCHOOLYARD at STONEVIEW ELEMENTARY
Help design a new shared space for the neighborhood and school
WHAT IS A COMMUNITY SCHOOLYARD?
Inviting Community Members to Share Outdoor School Spaces
DeKalb County students deserve great outdoor spaces for learning and playing, and all DeKalb County residents deserve great public parks. In pursuit of these goals, DeKalb County School District (DCSD) and Trust for Public Land (TPL) are working together to design and build improvements to the outdoor area around Stoneview Elementary. The project will improve public space that can serve school uses during school hours, and that can act as neighborhood green space when school is closed.
During this school year, students will design the schoolyard with input from community members. TPL and DCSD will collaborate on construction once the design is complete.
HOW IT WORKS

STUDYING THE SITE
Working with Stoneview Elementary students, Trust for Public Land studies shade, slope, stormwater, and existing utilities on the community schoolyard site to prepare for the design process.
PARTICIPATORY DESIGN
Using classroom activities, surveys, and design workshops, students shape the schoolyard design. Kids share their desires for the schoolyard, practice math and art skills, and draw up their own proposed designs for the site. Trust for Public Land incorporates their contributions into the final schoolyard plan.
CONSTRUCTION
Building the final design can be a lengthy process! TPL will work closely with DCSD and other project partners to bring the students' and community's vision to life. The construction process can be scheduled so it won't conflict with school events.
